Laurence Ste-Marie handles complex civil and commercial disputes. She has pleaded before all levels of court in Quebec as well as the Supreme Court of Canada. She also practices international arbitration (commercial and investment) and advises clients in cases that extend beyond the borders of Quebec.
Laurence’s versatility and adaptability allow her to tailor strategies to her client’s specific needs. She has experience in several fields and industries, including financial services, engineering, construction, renewable energy, telecommunications and professional liability. Well-known and appreciated for her sound judgment, she also regularly handles sensitive matters entailing reputational stakes.
Admitted to the Quebec, Ontario and Paris bars, Laurence previously practiced international arbitration in Paris. She was also a law clerk for Justice Marie Deschamps at the Supreme Court of Canada prior to pursuing her career in private practice.

Civil and Commercial Litigation
Obtained a landmark decision on the nature of the bank transfer in favour of our client, the National Bank of Canada, in CO-Operators General Insurance Co. v. Sollio Groupe Coopératif (formerly known as La Coop Fédérée), 2020 SCC 41.
Acted for the Canadian affiliate of a tobacco company in defense of a $60 billion claim by the Government of Québec for the recovery of tobacco-related healthcare costs.
Obtained the dismissal of an application for an injunction and obtained a conviction for abuse of process for the Canadian affiliate of an international renewable energy company.
Represented a company against a financial institution in connection with an aborted financing transaction.
Obtained the revocation of a judgment compelling a university researcher to disclose her confidential data.
Representing and advising several senior executives facing defamatory lawsuits, which include securing a judgment awarding moral and punitive damages.
Representation of professionals in civil and disciplinary actions.
Class Action
Obtained authorization for class action against some Jehovah's Witnesses entities regarding their handling of sexual abuse of minors.
Representing an automobile financing company with respect to the fees required for the transfer of vehicle leases.
Representing a telecommunications company in connection with a service interruption.
Representing a private educational institution with respect to tuition fees during the state of health emergency declared as a result of COVID-19.
International Arbitration
Represented an international organization in an UNCITRAL arbitration involving one of its member States.
Acted as an assistant to the Tribunal in the ICSID arbitration United Utilities (Tallinn) B.V. v. Republic of Estonia (ICSID No. ARB/14/24)
Represented a European telecommunications company against an Iranian company in an ICC arbitration in the context of an alleged breach of an equipment sales contract.
Represented a South European engineering company against an American automated controlled systems manufacturer in an ICC arbitration regarding the failure of such system in a cogenerating energy plant.
Represented Turkish investors against the state of Turkmenistan in an ICSID arbitration regarding multiple breaches of the Turkish-Turkmen bilateral investment treaty in relation to 31 construction contracts.
